"Dream deeply,
The sky may not
Be your limit.

(Amy A. Gregg)

  • Foreword to Heartbeat

It’s not often that I come across a body of writing, poetry in this instance, that has the ability to evoke my inner world in a way that is contained and nourished by the qualities of compassion and tenderness and understanding.  In each poem, within the separate words and phrases and structures I am awakened in ways I didn’t expect.  Don’t get me wrong, some of the communications deep within me that were summoned or given permission to arise by Amy’s words, were not easy initially to welcome or to be with.

But that’s the point, this collection of poetry is not meant to be ‘comfortable’, that would be too easy and sanitized, but if we meet it with curiosity and an openness it will certainly provide a ‘meeting place’ for our deepest longings and desires, as well as for the parts of us that would seek to limit these in the service of a ‘status quo’.

One thing’s for sure you won’t be able to ignore the emotional ebbs and flows, which come with all the variations of waves meeting a beach that Amy draws from in her love and passion for nature and the wild outdoors.

I would recommend you read this work out loud, and let the words and pace and prosody, become your own, and hence this poetry will become your own, gifted initially by the poet, but then ‘set free’ to take on a life of its own….or your life!

The poetic voice is not a gift given to many - but when you encounter it, its musicality is unmistakable.

Deep emotions, a sense of wonder and a desire to express the beauty of the moment are common enough human experiences. The lyric poet takes things further and matches sensibility with finely cadenced rhythms, euphonious juxtapositions and instantly memorable turns of phrase. The result is the sort of rich, lyrical word-music you will find in Heartbeat  - poems of love and of mindfulness; poems on life and death; poems of the moment and of the eternal.

Beautiful words from the soul, loved it!

I had been eagerly awaiting this book and it did not disappoint. Each page delivered another course of an exceptional meal. The poetry carried me along and and I became aware of the beautiful changes in pitch and pace as the author bared her soul and thoughts.
As I neared the halfway point I started to savour each morsel and make it last as long as it could. I will revisit this book often and very much look forward to doing so.
